Tiring of the headaches and anxiety from subletting work that his shop was ultimately responsible for, Jim Smith of Complete Collision Center in St. Robert, MO decided it was time to simply take control of ADAS work. He found that in-house control in alignment, balancing and ADAS equipment from Hunter Engineering.

“We got the whole package,” Smith said; “everything we need to accommodate the things we need to for our customers, and the things we need to properly do an ADAS or alignment procedure.”

Juan Bonilla, co-owner RSC Automotive in San Clemente, CA, didn’t hesitate to recognize that wheel alignments lead directly to profitable ADAS work. “We saw the need, because we were not going to be able to successfully complete accurate alignments,” since now the electronics tie into the mechanics, he says. “You can’t do one or the other without resynching the whole system.” 

Bonilla originally had space concerns about performing ADAS procedures, but following a Hunter training course, he realized many calibrations could be done with a little creative thinking. RSC selected Hunter equipment to service this growing ADAS work. The impact has been not only in sales – “They’ve gone up,” Bonilla says – but also in being able to “tap into an area we’ve never explored before.” The effects of adding this new area go beyond financial.Bonilla says technicians enjoy the morale boost from doing sophisticated work, customers are impressed, and “We call ourselves a one-stop shop, because we are a one-stop shop.”

As each month goes by, performing ADAS calibrations becomes less of a choice and more of a market necessity. Step one is gathering accurate information and avoiding misconceptions. Following a bumper repair on a 2022 Genesis G70, calibrating the front radar was a necessity. But with the fascia already reinstalled, Babcox Media’s Joe Keene explains, retrieving the required lot number from the nearly inaccessible radar unit presents an uncommon challenge. For some ADAS calibrations, the challenges aren’t in the calibrations themselves, but in the details of preparing for them.

As Babcox Media’s Joe Keene shows for this forward-facing camera calibration following a windshield replacement on a Stellantis vehicle, the procedure itself requires little more than driving. But first the technician will need to perform a few necessary tasks, such as ensuring a completed FCA registration.

Additionally, prior to driving the vehicle, the technician must select a route that avoids stopping, which will negate the calibration in progress. Internet access must also be maintained throughout the procedure. As Joe says, “See how you do it before you do it.”

A windshield replacement required the removal and replacement of the front-facing camera on this 2021 Audi Q3. An ADAS component usually doesn’t have to be damaged to require a calibration. It only has to be repositioned. A windshield replacement in the front and bumper damage in the back of this Hyundai Santa Cruz provides a good opportunity for a number of helpful ADAS calibration reminders, says Babcox Media’s Joe Keene. They include making sure your software is the current version; being sure of a mobile Wi-Fi hot spot for the test drive; verifying use of OEM glass; removing ADAS components alone requires calibration; and the importance of first performing an alignment.

ADAS can do quite a bit to improve safety, notes Babcox Media’s Joe Keene, but the driver must still become familiar with how the system works. Failure to do so can result in a collision, as was the case with this Mazda, which in turn results in the need for front radar calibration. The key to this Mazda millimeter-wave radar calibration is precisely establishing the centerline. When a new windshield goes in, a recalibration of the front windshield camera will need to come with it. Sometimes a calibration isn’t a calibration until the vehicle knows about it.
